MERMER AND TURKEY
Türkiye is the world leader in marble reserves, with approximately 40% of the world's marble potential, with a total reserve of 5.2 billion m³ (13.9 billion tons). There are 80 different types of marble in 120 colors and patterns in Turkey. In the marble sector, there are 1,825 licensed marble quarries, approximately 2,150 small and medium-sized factories, and 9,350 workshops, providing employment for about 303,000 people. In 2018, approximately 16.5 million tons of natural stone were produced in Turkey. Therefore, you are currently at the right address.
NATURAL STONE AND TURKEY
Türkiye is the world leader in the production and export of natural stone travertine. In 2020, global natural stone imports amounted to $15.1 billion, with marble and travertine imports accounting for approximately 38% of this total. Turkey holds the third position in the total export of natural stone groups, with a 10.3% share, following China and India. Therefore, you are currently at the right address.
TURKISH NATURAL STONES: WHERE ARE THEY USED?
Turkish natural stones have been preferred in significant structures worldwide. Some notable examples include the Kaaba complex, the Masjid al-Haram, columns and coverings at the entrance of Saint Pierre Church, one of the most important churches in the Vatican. Turkish natural stones have also been used in the area where press briefings are held at the White House in the United States, the parliaments of Germany and France, the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands, Disneyland, and numerous luxury hotels, airports, and shopping malls around the world.
FORMATION OF PRODUCTS
FORMATION OF GRANITE
Granite is a coarse-grained, volcanic, and plutonic rock that is primarily composed of quartz and feldspar minerals with small amounts of mica, amphibole, and other minerals. Granite is a volcanic rock that is formed by magma.
FORMATION OF BASALT
Basalt is a type of volcanic rock that is formed by the eruption of a volcano. Immediately following a volcanic eruption, basalt stones cool down and contract, taking on a prismatic shape. Basalt stones emerge as lava during a volcanic explosion. As the gas contained within escapes, specific voids or cavities are formed. Basalt rocks can be found in nature in masses, veins, and flows.
FORMATION OF ONYX
Onyx is a distinct type of stone from traditional "marble." It is challenging to differentiate it from marble at first glance. However, Onyx is semi-translucent and allows light to pass through, whereas marble is not transparent. While marble is obtained from layers near the Earth's surface, onyx is found in much deeper layers, gaining value based on its colors.
FORMATION OF LIMESTONE
Limestone is a special type of natural stone that is used in a variety of applications, including interior and exterior architecture. Limestone is typically formed through the fossilization and compaction of marine organisms such as mollusks and corals, turning their fossilized remains into sedimentary rock.
FORMATION OF MARBLE
Marble is a type of stone that is formed when underground limestone and dolomitic limestones undergo metamorphosis as a result of changes in temperature and pressure on the Earth's surface. This process reveals the primary structure of marble. Therefore, marble falls under the category of metamorphic rocks. Over 75% of its composition is made up of calcium carbonate. The natural formation of marble in nature can take millions of years.
FORMATION OF TRAVERTINE
Travertines are chemical sedimentary rocks composed of calcium carbonate. They are formed when calcium carbonate in underground waters precipitates under specific conditions. This precipitation over time creates travertines with soft lines. The process involves water containing a high amount of calcium hydrocarbonate emerging from a source at a temperature of 35.6°C. During the contact with oxygen in the air, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide are released, causing the precipitation of calcium carbonate and leading to the formation of travertine.
